Day 20 - Godafoss and Rhino Rock

We left Myvatn as the sun was coming up, with a long day of driving ahead.  As we left town though, the sun was rising behind the mountains and lighting the lake quite nicely, so we stopped in a little turn-out and took some photos.  We have not had any luck so far with sunrise shots we have got up early/prepared for, so you have to take the wins when they happen.

Next stop was Godafoss – the golden waterfall.  It sits in the middle of a flat plain, as as you come down the hill into the valley, there it is, looking quite impressive.  We went to the furthest car park first, and walked along the edge of the river snapping photos.  There was someone flying a drone despite the no drones signs, sigh.  Then we drove back across the river to the first car park, and again walked along the edge of the river, for a different view of the falls with less spray.  A few more pictures, and then we made a trip back up the hill to get a snap of the falls from the first view that we got at the top of the hill.  I forgot to take a photo on my phone from here, so that view will have to wait until  I’ve downloaded all my camera photos.

Lots of driving ahead as we made our way east, the weather was really nice and it was lovely scenery.

We skipped quite a number of churches that had been recommended, some were quite a drive out of our way, and we decided we’d rather spend the time going to Hvitserkur – or Rhino Rock is the pronounceable name.  This is, unsurprisingly, a rock that looks a bit like a rhino, just off the shore.  The road to get here was unpaved and full of ruts and potholes.  The wind was terrible, and we were getting covered in spray from the waterfall right next to the viewing platform, so we decided to walk down the path to the beach, and along to the rock.  Much better.  Still windy, but no spray here, and we were able to get some nice long exposures of the rock, floating in the sea.

Sigh....

Onwards to our next camp for the night, Budardalur tjaldsvaedi.  This turned out to be a bit of a bust, the toilets were closed for renovation until 22 October, so we had to trek to the school toilets next door. It was pretty windy and meant to rain, we were hoping it would wash the dirt off the van, but it didn’t rain at all.

It looked worse than this by the time we were done for the day
