Day 23 - Gullfoss and Geysir

This morning we started with Gullfoss waterfall, quite a magnificent waterfall with many pleasing angles for a budding photographer.

Gullfoss

This is part of the “golden circle”, an easy bus ride from Reykjavik, so there were plenty of tourists, including school groups from England – lucky buggers.  I’d woken feeling really crappy with a  splitting headache, likely caffeine withdrawal combined with my cold that is just sticking around.  So I topped up with a  2nd coffee and a smoked salmon bagel and started to feel a bit more human.  WE mooched around the gift shop and I bought some sheep Christmas decorations, yes I know, not exactly Christmassy but the sheep are just so darn cute.

Onwards to Geysir just down the road, a little bit like Rotorua but less colourful and spectacular, but free, and they also have a geyser that erupts with a  spurt of water about every 10 minutes.  So that was fun and we spent a couple of cycles trying to capture it at the moment it went woosh.  Another mooch through the gift shop, I’m quite keen to buy something “66 North”which originated in Iceland, but like everything else, the garments are not actually made here.

After that we headed to Vik, it’s B’s last day and we thought a re-do of that area, as the weather seems nice this time around, would nicely fill the gap between now and her flight tomorrow afternoon.

We had a quick visit to Reynisfjara and a walk to the black sand beach in Vik itself, which is the other side of the sea stacks.  There was a group out trotting along on horses, looking very Icelandic.

We had dinner at the local Black Crust Pizzeria, yes the crust really is black and yes I took a photo of my food.

Apparently they use activated charcoal, coconut based.  I was brave and had the Icelandic Langoustine (lobster) with trufle infused cream cheese, red onions, rucola, rosemary, fresh basil and chilli. It was delicious and very filling, and I couldn't eat it all.

We are staying at the same campground as before, when it poured rain and B’s tent was floating.  Tonight it was fine and dry but there was a steady stream of slamming doors and people seeming to come and go all hours of the night.  Odd, it hasn’t ever been an issue before.
