Day 26 - Heading south again

Todays plan was to head as far south as I could, stopping at Solheimasandur Plane wreck on the way, as we had skipped that the first time around.  In 1973 a United States navy plane ran out of fuel and crashed on the black beach at Solheimasandur.

Fortunately, everyone on the plane survived, but the wreckage is still there today, and a bit of a tourist attraction.  You can either walk the 4km from the parking lot just off the main road, or catch the bus which takes you there in about 10 mins for 3000KR.  I chose the bus because I’m lazy and there was a howling cold wind.  I arrived just as a bus left, but that gave me time to eat a sandwich for lunch and go to the loo. There are rarely "facilities" at these tourist spots, even though you are charged for parking. I really needed to go, and there were no trees or rocks, just flat land for miles around. It was time to try the Travel John.

I'll just say it was mostly successful, and leave it at that.  The wet spot on the mat has now dried and no-one will be any wiser.

The bag has a powder that turns liquid into a gel-like consistency, which is actually pretty effective.  And when there are no other options available, it gets the thumbs up from me.

I got on the midday bus and paid my 3000KR to the driver. We inched our way over potholes that our van wouldn't flinch at taking on at 80kph.  Big useless wussy bus. Just let me drive there myself!

The plane remains were pretty cool, though very little of it left.  It was initially swarming with everyone that had come on the bus posing for selfies, but they quickly got bored and walked to the beach and I was able to get some shots without hordes of bright coloured jackets etc.  I also had time to pop the drone up for some shots and be back at the bus stop for the next pick-up 30 minutes after we were dropped off.

Then I hit the road, and blasted on down to Vestrahorn, hoping for slightly better weather than last time.  At the moment it’s a howling gale and rain forecast during the night and all day Friday and Saturday.

It's the sunsets you don't plan for that are the best.

This beast just cost me $273.41 to fill with diesel from pretty much empty 😳

6 hours driving, 479km, if I never see the rear end of a Dacia Duster again it will be too soon.  Who calls a car a Duster anyway 🤔
