Day 27 - Vestrahorn redo

Well this time, the weather forecast was correct.  It was super windy last night, the van was rocking and rolling with the wind, not that I lost sleep over it.  When I woke it was grey and wet.  The clouds were right down on the mountain, but I decided to drive out the short distance to the photo taking spot, and brew my coffee while I waited for a miracle lift in the weather.  It did not come, but I did enjoy my breakfast washed down with coffee.

Sigh

By about 9am I had taken what few pictures were possible, none at all of Vestrahorn as it was completely covered in cloud, and decided to head off.  No point staying around another day on the off-chance of good weather, so I started heading back north again, picking a few spots I have previously missed.  I stopped again at Diamond Beach, and even though the weather was still windy and cold, there was a lot more ice on the beach, so that kept me entertained for quite a while snapping pictures of that.

Diamond beach, lots of diamonds

I tried to use the facilities over at the main parking area, but it was completely full.  Why wouldn’t you have toilets at all three car parks I wondered.  Sigh.

I kept heading north, though my plans to re-fly a possibly now thawed Mulagljufur Canyon were again thwarted by the rain.

Meanwhile a warning message was pinging every time I turned the ignition on, saying oil with a spanner.  I contacted the Camp Easy guys through their tablet chat facility and they responded almost immediately and asked for a photo of the instrument panel with the message.  I could easily do this through the tablet.  They confirmed that it is just a service reminder and I can ignore it.  Great service.

I kept heading north and eventually out-ran the rain and was treated to brilliant blue skies and sunshine for a few hours before it clagged in again.

Cool clouds

It’s now cleared to cloudy but not wet or windy where I am staying tonight in another re-do, Selfoss, scene of the great ham carving.

It is noticeably much quieter on the tourist route now, although you can add Suzuki Jimny to the growing list of vehicles that are SLOW and ANNOYING to sit behind.  And Kia’s, any model you like, the drivers are all slow and wussy.

Selfoss campsite was heaving with people last time we were here, you couldn’t get a look-in to charge anything.  This time I have the entire kitchen area and bank of power points to myself.

I plan to head into Reykjavik tomorrow for my last two nights here in Iceland, there are a few things I want to tick off in the city but I didn’t fancy battling Friday evening traffic after a long day of driving.  It’s less than an hour from here, so I will still get two full days, plus Monday morning before I have to drop the camper off.
