Day 21 - Snaefellsnes Peninsular

 The rain was saved for today.  Sigh.  We got up before 6am and headed out with only coffee as motivation, a two hour drive to Kirkjufell, a mountain made famous by the TV series Game of Thrones, which I have not watched.  We got there before sunrise, and it was dark and wet wet wet.  I was not having fun.  We waited around for a bit, so we could say that the sun had risen, even though we could not see it and it was barely light.

We took a couple of snaps to record the fact that we had been there, and carried on with our trip around the Snaefelles Peninsular.  It was actually really pretty scenery, despite the wind and the rain, and we tried to make the best of it.  We found a beach (Skardsvik) with golden sand, yes they do have golden sand in Iceland as well as black sand, and a few cliffs (Arnarstapi), lava fields, and waterfalls along the way, with a black church thrown in for good measure.

Tonight we are staying at Fossatun Camping Pods, which is a quaint little spot with a nice waterfall, lots of troll, stories, hot tubs, and cute little camping pods.  Our dirty camper is parked slightly away from the cutesy spots, looking a little neglected.  Although all the rain has washed off most of the dirt.

A quick chat with the owner, it's actually his fathers collection, reveals there are over 4000 albums. Wow.

Day 29 - Reykanes peninsular

It was a stunning day today, clear blue sky and sunshine, with zero wind.  I decided to spend my last full day on the Reykanes peninsular, there were a few things left on the list that weren't ticked yet.  I also decided to stay at a campsite out near the airport, so there would, in theory, be less light pollution than last night, as we did get a brief show of aurora.  There is a big swimming pool complex next to the camp and they leave the lights on all night, which is rather annoying. I also figured I wouldn't have to battle Monday morning traffic to return the camper on time. So I set off once I had thawed the windscreen, the entire thing was frozen this time, top to bottom. They sure know how to do a good frost here. Day 10 - Inside the Volcano

 We both slept warm and comfortable, and got coffee brewing from about 6.30am.  I managed to do this without setting fire to anything.  The kitchen is completely inside the van, and the reason for this is the Icelandic weather.  We have a small gas burner that screws into a gas cylinder, fill the kettle, plonk it on top and fire it up.  Didn’t take too long, and I made a passable coffee from my supply of Jeds coffee bags. We had booked on the 8am Inside the Volcano trip, and as we are self-drive, we had to be at the meeting point by 8.30am. Google told us it was about an hour from our campsite in Grindavik to the meeting point. What google didn't tell us was that one of the roads it directed us to use is permanently closed. We set off at 7.15 allowing plenty of time. Cough. As we were heading down the 417 road, there was a little sign that seemed to indicate that the road came to a dead end in 6km. Day 25 - Kirkjufell redo

 Well waddayaknow, the weather forecast was NOT accurate and the rain the was meant to come overnight .... arrived in time for sunrise. The light was awful at Kirkjufell, even though it wasn't as bad as last time it did not inspire me. Instead I headed out on the "sword road" which has erosion barriers that look a bit like the hilt of a sword. I managed to get the drone up for some quick snaps between rain showers, although it came back with a few spots of rain on it.   The rain seemed to lift a bit and the light improved so I went back to Kirkjufell for some snaps, got annoyed with people that thought barriers were not meant for them, they had important selfies to take don't ya know, and generally pottered around the area.  Slightly better than last time I had driven in on a different road from last time, as we'd approached from west rather than south, also it was dark and lashing rain last time too.  Anyway, I discovered some more amazing scenery.
